I Wash My Hair Once A Week And It Never Looked Better

April 30, 2018

When I tell people that I wash my hair once a week, I hear all sorts of comments – Ew! Gross! etc.

Well, hear me out first.

I have super thick hair (just ask all the girls that ever had to work on my hair, they will tell you that working with thick hair is like double the work) and this may be one of the reasons why I wash my hair once a week. It takes me more than 2 hours to wash it, dry it, and style it. It’s such a waste of time!

SHAMPOO, CONDITION, MASK, DRY (the most dreadful part), AND STYLING.

I get tired just thinking about all this. Thankfully I just washed my hair two days ago, so I won’t have to think about it for another five days.

Actually, it’s not like I’m on a strict schedule. For example, I don’t need to wait exactly seven days to wash it. I may wash it a day earlier or a day later. It just really depends on what I did during the week. If I was out most of the time, if I worked out or just feel like I need an extra wash, I’ll do it. But if I can go another day without washing it, I’m all for it.

The day after I wash my hair, it is big, frizzy, and out of control. I literally have to use so much product to calm it down. So on days like that, I usually just put it in a braid or ponytail and I do all the styling the second or the third day after my wash.

QUITE FRANKLY, MY HAIR LOOKS THE BEST THE SECOND
AND THE THIRD DAY AFTER I WASH IT.

Okay, so another reason why I don’t like washing my hair – the more you wash your hair, the more oil your scalp produces.

Your scalp produces sebum, or natural oils and every time you wash your hair, you wash all these natural oils away. Therefore, your scalp ends up producing more oils to compensate.

The good news – you can actually train your hair to go longer in between washes.

How? Space out your washes.

It may feel weird at first, especially if you are used to washing it every day but once you train your hair, you won’t look back.

A good dry shampoo will be your new best friend! Look for one that does a good job at absorbing oil while leaving your hair clean and fresh. Dry shampoos remove excess grease from your hair and add texture, so your hair will hold a curl.

Another trick I do that helps me space out my washes – once I add dry shampoo, I spray a small amount of water to my hairline and then blow dry my hair.

How often do you wash your hair? What is the longest you’ve gone without washing your hair?
